WHAT IF I DON’T WANT TO SLAY?
WHEN DID PRODUCTIVITY BECOME SO VIOLENT?
I don’t want to crush it.
Or smash it.
Or kill it, whatever “it” is.
I want to gently go about my business.
Softly take care of things.
Maybe have a nice cup of tea.
Take a peaceful walk.
Snuggle up with my cats.
That feels more like me.
And yet, when I look around, the language of work so often sounds like a battlefield. We’re told to hustle. To dominate our to-do lists. To slay our goals. And if we don’t? We’re failing. Falling behind. Not serious about success.
But… what if the problem isn’t us?
What if the language, and the expectations that come with it, were never designed for the way many of us work best?
Especially if you’re neurodivergent, creative, sensitive, or simply tired of grinding away at systems that don’t feel good for your system… you might recognise that “crushing it” is not the vibe. Not for you. Not anymore.
Over the years, I’ve tried just about every productivity method out there. Some of them helped a little. Some helped for a while. But none of them ever felt truly aligned with how I wanted to live.
What I’ve come to understand is that I don’t want productivity to be a weapon. I want it to be a rhythm. A relationship. A practice of care.
My work still matters. My goals still matter. But the way I move toward them has changed.
Now I ask:
— Does this feel kind?
— Does this support my nervous system?
— Am I still being myself inside the doing?
Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes it’s no.
But asking those questions, without shame or rush, has become a radical act of self-trust.
So, no, I’m not here to slay or conquer anything. I’m here to build something sustainable. Something real. Something soft enough to hold the life I actually want to live.
If that resonates with you, you’re not alone.
Let’s find a new way. One that doesn’t require violence to be effective.
